Place:Grid node definition.

Description

Nodes with both the "Place" and "Grid" labels, representing a single grid square in an established grid system, such as an official national grid system or one specifically created for a project. For the Umm Al-Jimal Archaeological Project, a system of 100m x 100m grid squares (n=460) was established in 2023 as part of the UNESCO nomination process, covering the UNESCO World Heritage Site buffer zone and adjacent areas, with a further subdivision of 10m x 10m grid squares inside each 100m2 grid (n=46,000 total grid squares). These grid squares are referred to using the "UJ.Grid.261.037" notation, which refers to the 37th 10m x 10m grid square that is located inside the 261st 100m x 100m grid square (i.e., inside the "Barracks Chapel"). It is hoped that this grid system will allow for a more logical reference to locations across the site and its buffer zone, as references to existing fieldwork areas (e.g., Area U around the West Church) or excavation trenches (Trench U.03 inside the West Church) are harder to locate for those who are not intimately familiar with the project's work.
